Ever since my article about the movie being whitewashed, up till now, people are still bitching about it instead of giving it a chance and watching it themselves. Seriously, people nowadays are sensitive as fuck about everything. Anyway, your not here for that, you are here about the review and I got you. I just recently watched the movie and in my opinion, I like the movie and your going to find out why now:
Do you remember the story from the original movie? If you don’t, I will give you a short reminder: The whole movie was about section 9 looking for a guy named the puppet master that is controlling people and erasing their memories and they have stop him before he gets more victims. Now, in the live action movie, it’s exactly the same thing but only a few changes which I will be explaining more soon. So if you have seen the original anime movie then you know what am I talking about and if not, I would strongly encourage you to watch it before watching this movie because it will help you have a better understanding of the movie.
I loved almost everything about the movie. The characters we know and loved from the anime look good and the CGI of the city looked amazing. The actor who played as Batou did a great job at portraying him cause he looked and acted like him from the anime. There was one part of the movie where it showed batou feeding some stray dogs in the street which definitely showed that the actor or director had done his homework. It’s not a big deal to some but to me it is since in the anime, batou always have a love for dogs. Scarlett Johanson did great as the major and of course this is my opinion since I don’t know who else would be able to portray the character other then her. She portrayed her the way she is in the anime and the clothes she wore were identical from the original anime movie.
I also loved how chief Aramaki looked, keep in mind that the chief throughout the movie only spoke Japanese and is played by a Japanese actor and he looked so cool. I know for some people, they would find that weird and unnecessary to have the chief only speaking Japanese while everyone else was talking to him in English but it didn’t bother me at all. I liked how they pulled off the anime’s famous mind communication between the characters. It’s exactly how it is in the anime and I was pleased they did that right. Finally They even have this scene from the anime movie and it turned out great. Compare and see for yourself:
This is the part you guys are waiting for and the big question: What was bad about the movie? To me, there was only 3 things about the movie I didn’t like:
- Batou has a Australian accent: I didn’t like how he had a Australian accent but I was able to look past it since it wasn’t a big deal to me since that’s how the actor talks and it wasn’t intentional to make the character sound that way. Regardless, Batou looked great in the movie so this is minor but worth mentioning.
2. The puppet master’s name is Kuze: In the original movie, the puppet master didn’t have a name and it was just called project 2501 or puppet master (That’s obvious). Kuze is the name of the main antagonist from season 2 of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The movie didn’t have anything from the show except for the Geishas which came from episode 1 of season 1 of the show:
3. They made the major have a past: In the show, you barely know anything about the major’s past since the anime is more focused on the cases she is dealing with along with her group. I wont bother spoiling what origin they gave her in the movie, I’ll let you find out for yourself.
Out of all of the anime live action movies that was made, to me, this is the best one if you look pass the negatives of the movie. I give this movie a 4 out of 5 rating since they gave the major a past when in reality, we don’t know anything about her past except a few bits and pieces of it. I hope you guys enjoyed this review and tell me what do you guys think of this movie and would you watch it and why.
